The scientist José Ramírez, from the Center of Tropical Investigations (Cinat) of the National University (UNA) celebrated yesterday the inauguration of a new room in the Children’s Museum.

In this new space a portion of a real hive with 8,000 african bees was located in the museum. It was cut carefully to show the interior of a natural swarm and how the bees manufacture the honey.

The queen bee, the drones and the honey may be seen through the glass. A fragrance of the product may also be smelled.

For the absolute security of the visitors, all the bees are behind two layers of fortified glass. "The intention of this exhibit is to remove the stigma that there is for these animals. By observsating the exhibit one may come to understand its great ecological value, a greater appreciation for thee bees is acquired", said Cristina Briceño, curator of the Museum

.

The children of the Don Bosco School, that attended the inauguration, never tired out and asked the experts a handful of questions. Thus, the only silence in the morning was done when the scientist Ramírez explained that the bees have five eyes, two hoods that are used to see in the day and three further back (located in the upper part of their head) used for seeing in the darkness and to perceive the ultraviolet radiation.

Another of the news for the children was that the bees are vital in the development of certain fruits, like melon. "Without bees there is no melon, therefore they are in charge of pollinating the plants, which is quite important", the expert said of the exhibit.

The exhibit reflects on the nutritious and medicine potential of the honey with products as wines, creams, wax of candles and even a liquid against pinkeye.

A vaccine to avoid that cows contract an infection in their udders, a database with medical information and an apparatus that will permit to save water in the toilets are all part of the 16 projects that Costa Rican businesses exhibited in the I National Convention of Innovation.

This activity was carried out in the hotel Crowne Plaza Corobicí, amd had as an objective to show the successful initiatives of Costa Rican enterprises and how do they think up profitable products and equipment for farming, medicine and other sectors.

The quality of the milk that a cow produces diminishes a lot when this animal acquires mastitis, an infection that swells up its udders. To avoid the discomfort of the animal and to favor its production of milk, a Costa Rican business developed a new vaccine that stimulates the immune system of the cows. The product avoids that they develop this illness.

Another of the projects presented in the fair belongs to a trio of engineering students in Industrial Maintenance of the Technological Institute of Costa Rica. They developed a company that is in charge of converting the waste generated during the attainment procedure of coffee in bricks, that is to say, in a species of compressed produce in the shape of bricks. The brick function is to substitute the wood of the traditional ovens utilized for toasting the coffee. In this way, waste is transformed into a utility as contamination is avoided.

A team of the National Center of Medicine Information from the University of Costa Rica (UCR) have created a product named as MasterMed. It consists of a digital database that compiles more than ten official medical books with information on principle assets and medicines.

The Echo Flapper is a capable apparatus of regulating the discharge of toilet water. This is a small appliance with the form of a plug that can be implemented in any sanitary service with the intention of regulating the flow of the water. Such product is of an accessible price. "These activities intend to promote the value of the undertaking and the innovation, besides it intends to sensitize and prompt people so that they may develop their own ideas", explained Mark Lebendiker, president of ParqueTec.
