The Department of Public Education (MEP) plans to build various schools with dormitories in the native zones so that the students from far away places can live in them.

This measure tries to facilitate youths that travel daily on foot long distances among mountains, rivers and roads to come arrive to school. Due to these difficult conditions, some kids prefer no to attend secondary education. The new schools will have a dining room so that the students that utilize the dormitories may have breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The project’s objective is that the youths remain in the school between Monday and Friday, and that they can return on weekends to their homes. 18 schools are expected to be built, many of which already function, but are in precarious conditions. The project plans on reconstructing 100 schools, all with materials from the zone.

The MEP plans to begin the project in the second semester of the present year with the hopes of it to be ready by the next academic year. The schools that will be repaired are located in native communities in Talamanca, Matina (province of Limon), the districts of Buenos Aires (Puntarenas) and Guatuso (Alajuela). The project will not affect the environment and will preserve the customs of their inhabitants.

Besides building classrooms for grade school and high school, the MEP plans to improve the formation of the teachers that work in the native zones.
